Wellness Policy
The Beaverton School District Wellness Policy was developed in response to federal legislation which mandated that each school district participating in the USDA funded school meals program “establish a local school wellness policy by School Year 2006”.
The legislation required that the policy set goals in the following four different areas and to have a plan for measuring policy implementation.
- Nutrition Education
- Physical Activity
- Nutrition Guidelines for all foods sold on campus during the school day
- Other school-based activities designed to promote student wellness
The legislation also required that Parents, Students, Nutrition Services staff, School Board representatives, Principals, and Community Members be involved in developing the policy. Beaverton School District took this one step further and chose to involve Health and PE teachers as well.
After soliciting volunteers in each of the groups above, the district formed a Wellness Policy Development Team which began meeting in January, 2006.The Team drafted language for both the Wellness Policy and for the Wellness Policy administrative regulations, (AR’s).The Wellness Policy was adopted by the school board on May 8, 2006 and the Wellness Policy AR’s were adopted the following May.
Implementation of the Wellness Policy AR’s
Implementation of the Wellness Policy Administrative Regulations will occur during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 school years. To assist in implementation, the following links to resources from the Connecticut Department of Education’s Child Nutrition web pages are provided. The Connecticut nutrition guidelines are similar to those in BSD’s administrative regulations.
