Tips For Parents During Critical Incidents

In light of recent events:

  • Bomb Threat at Gladstone High School
  • Sniper/Bomb Threat at Lewisville Middle School in Battleground, WA
  • Sniper Shooting, Gresham OR
  • Shooting Virginia Tech

We thought it was necessary to outline some tips for parents to help the school district and local law enforcement work through critical incidents, should they happen. Every now and then an event of great magnitude occurs at a school and there are things parents can do to help bring the situation to a successful conclusion.

The most important thing parents can do to help the school district and local law enforcement is to give them your full support. There might be situations that occur where children’s safety could be in jeopardy, but parents should understand that there are protocols in place to deal with such critical incidents. There could be times when the dissemination of information may not be as quick and complete as a parent would want, but there are legitimate reasons for that. The parents must have the patience to trust school officials and local law enforcement that their kids are being taken care of and the situation is being worked diligently.

The worst thing a parent can do is to become a part of the problem by not complying with specific orders from the school district or police officials. Our ultimate goal during any critical incident is to ensure the safety of everyone involved and that can only be accomplished with everyone working together. The school district and local law enforcement have built a joint partnership to address problems that happen from time to time and train for critical incidents should they occur. A lot has been learned from other school incidents, both locally and nationally, and strategies have been established to address similar situations.

We cannot stress enough the need for everyone to cooperate with the authorities in place to handle critical incidents. We also encourage anyone with questions to contact the security director for the Beaverton School District. Thank you for your continued support.
