Transportation
The Beaverton School District has the largest publically owned fleet in the state of Oregon, consisting of 315 active buses. Some of our buses, called "mini buses", are specially equipped to transport special needs students. In addition to daily routes, we also provide service for field trips, and various after school programs. In total, our buses travel over 3,000,000 miles annually, which is enough to circumvent the earth 125 times. We also have one of the cleanest running fleets in the state, with older buses retrofiited with advanced diesel particulate filters. To manage the logisics of our operation, provide consistent service and ensure the safey of students, we have a full-time support staff. Below is a description of the role of these various departments within transportation: Safety: We have full-time staff devoted exclusivly to safety. They evaluate the safety of stop locations and streets, and make a determination based on a well defined set of criteria. They also analyze video from our buses security system and share it with the schools when there has been an incident. Routing: Routing is responsible for the logistics of creating routes and maintaining them througout the year. They strive to build the most efficient routes within the confines of state law, and policies of our Safety department. They must also balance factors such as the load capacity of the bus, the hours of the driver, and of course, getting the kids to school on time. Training: Our training department has the task of certifying that each driver has the proper skills to operate a school bus safely, and handle various medical emergencies which might take place. Each new driver goes through a training program they must pass before becoming a bus driver. They are also constantly giving refresher courses to current drivers. Dispatch: Our dispatchers are the primary point of contact for our drivers for any issues that might come up while they are in the field. They also ensure that all routes are covered and accounted for.
