Attendance Procedures

  1. Students should organize their time so they are not late to class and use their planners to obtain permission to leave class and to use a computer outside of class.
  2. Parents must call the school on the day of a student's absence(s) to excuse students.
  3. Upon returning to school, students must report to the Attendance Office for a readmit which they should show their teachers.
  4. If absences have not been excused, students will receive an unexcused absence. Work missed during unexcused absences cannot be made up.

Consequences for Unexcused Absences

1st and 2nd Offense - the student will conference with the Dean of Students, Mr. Vernon, be assigned Skytime Detention or Work Crew, and their parent will be called.

3rd and 4th Offense - The student will be "red flagged" as having a serious attendance problem, and their parents will be contacted by e-mail or letter. The student's teacher will call parents and the student may be denied privileges (e.g. use of computers, participation in school dances).

5th to 9th Offense - The student will be referred to the Student Support Team (SST) for intervention and is in danger of losing full or partial credit for any class for which they have excessive excused or unexcused absences. The DM V will be notified for possible revocation of the student's driver's license if ten consecutive or fifteen non-consecutive days in two or more classes have been missed.

Tardies

The first three tardies will be dealt with by the student's teacher. Any subsequent tardy may be referred to Mr. Vernon and treated as an unexcused absence.

Off-Campus Violations

We have a closed campus as per School Board policy. An "off campus" violation will result in having parking privileges revoked for up to one year, either Work Crew or Skytime Detention will be assigned, and parent(s) will be notified.

Attendance Definitions

An absence begins ten (10) minutes after the class starts.
Excused Absence
Absence caused by: the student's illness; serious illness of some member of the student's family; death in the immediate family; an emergency; conferring with a staff member; prearranged absence for field trips, doctor and dental appointments, college visitations or family vacations; competitive athletic or other co-curricular activities; and official religious holidays.

Unexcused absence
The student's parent(s) or guardian(s) have knowledge of the absence, but it is not for a reason that would be granted as an excused absence (i.e., haircuts, shopping, going to the store, recreation, sleeping in, running home for books). Students who are absent for unexcused reasons will not receive course credit for any make-up work.
Make-up work
Make-up work for excused absences is to be obtained during Skytime and must be completed during the timeframe agreed upon by the teacher and student. Requests for assignments for less than three days by ill students will be discouraged. In the interest of teachers' time and planning, requests for assignments will not be expected until 2:30 pm the following day.
Pre-arranged absence
(is) an excused absence arranged in advance by the parent(s) and student; the required paperwork is obtained through the Attendance Office and the student is required to keep abreast of all class work on schedule or incur an academic penalty The teacher may assign alternative activities in lieu of the regular assignment.
