Graduation
Only those students who have earned their required number of credits may participate in graduation exercises. A student who successfully completes all requirements of the State of Oregon, the Beaverton School District Board of Education, Southridge High School and who is in good standing may participate in graduation exercises.
Students planning to enter a four-year State of Oregon university will need to meet the state's admission requirements listed in the planning guide. Students planning to attend out-of-state and/or private colleges and universities should work closely with their counselor to plan their high school course of study as it relates to specific admission requirements.
Beginning with the Class of 2005, the District expects all students to study a second language. Therefore, all students are expected to plan for at least two years of instruction in a second language prior to graduation. Please refer to the District's "Second Language Handbook Requirements for the Class of 2005" for more information.
Minimum Graduation Requirements
As students plan for their four-year course of studies they should keep in mind that the following requirements are minimums. For the majority of Southridge students, taking additional coursework to meet additional requirements of competitive colleges and universities is an important consideration. Those students who are planning on attending college or other advanced educational opportunities should pursue challenging academic programs during their high school careers which often means taking more than the minimum required courses. In accordance with the State of Oregon, Beaverton School District, and Southridge High School, students graduating must complete the following minimum requirements:
| Language Arts | 4.0 credits |
| Mathematics | 2.0 credits |
| Social Sciences (including history, civics, geography, economics, government, and personal finance) | 3.0 credits |
| Science (1 of which must be a lab science) | 2.0 credits |
| Health Education | 1.0 credit |
| Physical Education | 1.0 credit |
| Applied Arts, Fine Arts, or Second Language | 9.5 credits |
| Career Development (will be granted upon successful completion of Career Development activities that have been integrated into the required curriculum (including Skytime and Advisory activities) and the Service Learning requirement | .5 credit |
| Total Minimum Credits | 23 credits |
Please note that the 23 credit requirement for graduation from Beaverton Schools is a minimum. Because of the trimester schedule, Southridge students can earn up to 30 credits, and they are encouraged to earn as many credits as possible regardless of their post-high school plans. Students should follow an ambitious course of studies in high school in preparation to meet the challenges of post-high school education.
Service Learning
Service to others benefits the community and the individual. Service Learning is active participation in an unpaid, pre-approved activity which is of benefit to other individuals or groups, community agencies, or the community at large and which relates to the curriculum. Students who complete 60 hours of service learning are rewarded intrinsically by helping others. Southridge High School recognizes the value of this experience and rewards students by giving them partial credit toward their career development requirement (.5 credit).
Mapped Academic Plan & Profile (MAPP)
Mapping an Academic Plan and Profile begins with the use of the planning guide and with the thought you are putting into course selection for the present year and for your overall four-year high school plan. The student Mapped Academic Plan & Profile worksheet has been designed as a tool to assist you in creating your own MAPP. A thoughtful MAPP will provide the opportunity for success in high school, post-secondary education and setting career goals. Your counselors, teachers, and administrators will assist you with an annual update and will encourage you to carefully select classes on the basis of your interests and aptitude.
Senior Project
Beginning with the class of 2005, all seniors will be expected to complete each aspect of the Senior Project in order to graduate from Southridge High School. As we fully implement CAM, students are encouraged to participate in the Senior Project experience. The intent of the Senior Project is to provide a meaningful culminating experience for seniors, give students the opportunity to showcase their accomplishments, develop self-confidence, and demonstrate high levels of competence; and, foster interaction among students, teachers and our community. A Senior Project Resource Guide is available online.
After Graduation
Students who are college bound should note college admission requirements and take advantage of the opportunity to earn a Southridge Scholar's Diploma through a well-rounded and challenging four-year high school program. Students who will continue their studies through a Community College or professional technical school should also take advantage of this opportunity, and should consider those courses which offer dual high school and Portland Community College credit.
