STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE CHARTER
The Beaverton School Board believes that perspectives from students should provide significant input into district decisions. Consequently, the board is establishing the Beaverton Student Advisory Committee.
The student advisory committee serves as an advisory group to the school board and the superintendent, providing input and ideas about key issues in the district. Members represent all of the students in the district and their respective schools.
A school board liaison and the superintendent or designee will support the student advisory committee’s work.
The school board intends that the educational experiences for the members of the BSAC are challenging and valuable and allow the students to contribute to the effective operation of the district.
Selection
High school principals will select students to serve on the BSAC. The school board seeks student members with a diversity of ages, ethnicities, experiences, and viewpoints. We expect fifteen students to serve on the committee, two from each comprehensive high school and one from each option school.
Students interested in serving on the committee will complete a common application to apply.
Performance Expectations
- All students must maintain the same standards and qualifications established by the school board for students participating in extracurricular activities.
- Students are expected to attend all scheduled meetings. Students needing to miss a meeting should notify their school principal, or his/her designee, and the Student Committee President in advance.
- Any student having two or more unexcused absences may be removed from the BSAC by the school principal. In such a case, another student from that school may be selected to serve out the remainder of the student’s term.
- Student representatives are expected to actively participate and represent students. Between meetings of the BSAC, members are expected to complete all assignments.
Meeting Structure and Responsibility
- The student advisory committee will meet regularly during the year. The school board and student advisory committee will meet once or twice a year in joint meetings.
- Student committee members will develop and design the annual goals of the BSAC in conjunction with the superintendent and committee board liaison and present those to the school board.
- The student leadership team will run the committee meetings.
- The student leadership team will develop the meeting schedule for the upcoming school year.
Student Advisory Committee Student Leadership
- The student advisory committee members will select a student leadership team including a president, vice-president, and secretary.
- The student committee secretary will compile meeting minutes for delivery to the school board. The student leadership team shall present their meeting summary at board business meetings.
- The board recommends that the student leadership team:
- Attend all regular meetings of the school board; and, upon invitation by the Board Chair, work sessions of the school board;
- Read and review all materials prior to board meetings;
- Provide brief updates to the board about matters related to the Student Advisory Committee and district students.
