Superintendent

The Beaverton School District School Board is pleased to announce that Dr. Anthony Smith has accepted the position of superintendent, effective July 1. Dr. Smith currently serves as the deputy superintendent of schools for Denver Public Schools.
“I am truly excited to join the Beaverton School District and to work alongside the talented educators, dedicated staff, engaged families and remarkable students who make this community so strong,” says Dr. Smith. “Beaverton has a clear commitment to excellence and opportunity, and I look forward to listening, learning and partnering with the community to ensure every student is supported, challenged and prepared for a bright future.”
Dr. Smith’s career is defined by a steadfast commitment to student success. Before serving as deputy superintendent, he held a series of leadership roles within Denver Public Schools — ranging from high school English teacher and principal to chief of equity and engagement and instructional superintendent. His leadership also extends to the charter sector, having served as regional superintendent for KIPP Texas Public Schools in Dallas.
“Dr. Smith is a strong instructional leader with a proven record of improving graduation rates, attendance and student achievement in reading and math,” says School Board Chair Sunita Garg. “Combined with a deep commitment to inclusion and student success, his experience makes him the right choice to lead our district forward.”
The Beaverton School Board launched its nationwide superintendent search in August, following the announcement that then-superintendent Dr. Gustavo Balderas had accepted a position as the superintendent for the Puget Sound Educational Service District in Washington.
The rigorous search process included extensive input from the entire BSD community via surveys and focus groups. The school board and a community-based panel — composed of students, parents, staff and community members — interviewed finalists to ensure the next leader would be a steward of the district’s mission and a champion for all students.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Smith to the Beaverton community.
