Superintendent

Michael Schofield
The School Board has named Michael Schofield to serve as interim superintendent of the Beaverton School District for the remainder of the school year, between the departure of current superintendent Dr. Gustavo Balderas and the hiring and arrival of the district’s next superintendent. The board voted unanimously to approve the appointment on January 13.
Mr. Schofield is the district’s Chief Financial Officer and Associate Superintendent for Business Services. He has worked in public school finance for 37 years, including more than three decades in executive leadership, and brings deep and relevant experience in district administration. Throughout his career, Mr. Schofield has been a trusted advisor and key strategic partner to superintendents and school boards, with a comprehensive understanding of district operations, governance, finance, labor relations and compliance.
On behalf of the school board, chair Sunita Garg said, “Mike Schofield is a respected leader with extensive experience, excellent judgment and deep knowledge of our district that make him well suited to lead the district during this transition. The board believes that Mr. Schofield is uniquely qualified to provide steady, knowledgeable leadership and to support staff, students and the community while the superintendent search is underway. He is, quite simply, the right person to have at the helm during this time of transition. We are grateful for his willingness to serve in this role during this important time for our schools and community.”
“The school board also extends our sincere gratitude to Dr. Gustavo Balderas for his service as superintendent. During his tenure, Dr. Balderas led important work to strengthen district systems and advance student learning across the district. We thank Dr. Balderas for his leadership and dedication to the community and wish him well in his next chapter,” said Garg.
Superintendent Balderas, who has led the district since 2022, departed at the end of January to become the superintendent of an education service district in the Seattle area. The board has undertaken a comprehensive nationwide superintendent search process and aims to announce the selection of the district’s next superintendent in March, to assume responsibilities July 1 or earlier.
