Response to Recent Tragic Events

* Note: the message below was updated to reflect further developments after the original publication.

BSD Community,

Our country bore witness to a weekend of senseless and devastating violence, including a mass shooting at a grocery store in a predominantly-Black community in Buffalo, at a predominantly-Taiwanese church in southern California, and at a flea market in Houston. Both the church and grocery store shootings are now being investigated as hate crimes.* Our hearts are with all these communities as they come to grips with their losses.

We know that violence of this nature has a ripple effect in all communities, including ours. We are ready to support and hold spaces for those impacted by these horrific events, including our students and staff.

The Beaverton School District reaffirms our commitment to fostering school environments free from hate and bias where all students feel a sense of belonging and safety. As it states in our district’s Anti-racist Vision Statement, eliminating racism and all forms of bias is fundamental to our work — not just a part of our work. BSD seeks to authentically engage each student, family and staff member to build connection, uplift understanding and truly value the diversity of our school communities.

If you need resources to help guide your discussion of these events with your children, please see the list below.

Sincerely,
Don Grotting
Superintendent
