Secondary Grading Guidance

The Beaverton School District believes that learning is an ongoing process in which all students learn in different ways and at different rates. However, the (F) mark has communicated a conflicting message — that the time for learning is finite and that the rate of learning is confined to an academic semester. Moving forward, BSD will improve the clarity of communication around academic progress on a scale that no longer includes the F-mark. Instead, when students have not yet demonstrated proficiency, a mark of Incomplete (I) or No Grade (N) will be reported. Students will then be given extra support to meet learning targets.

We believe that this change is a significant step in our move to meet the needs of all students. We know the move will not be without challenges, but we’re excited about the improvements to our system and the increased student achievement that will happen as a result.
