Welcome Back from Superintendent Don Grotting

Dear BSD Community,

It’s no secret that our progress against the COVID-19 virus has taken a hit in the past few weeks. The delta variant is a real threat to our community’s health and well-being. At the same time, we’re keenly aware that most of our students learn better when they have the opportunity to attend school full time and in person.

Just in the past few weeks, we’ve received new guidance from Governor Kate Brown, the Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon Health Authority — meant to ensure the safety of our staff and students to the greatest extent possible.

  • Everyone — staff, students and visitors — will be required to wear a mask while inside our schools, outside our schools and on our buses.
  • Everyone will exercise social distancing.
  • All staff members and volunteers will be required to show proof of vaccination by October 18.

In addition, we’ll continue our cleaning and ventilation protocols, as advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other experts.

Can we guarantee 100% protection from the disease? No, no one can. But I assure you that our staff is committed to keeping your children safe while providing them the best education possible.

We’ve been apart for too long. This past year and a half has tested us, but we now have an opportunity to recommit and remind ourselves of those qualities that make BSD… BSD. Let’s be welcoming, kind, encouraging, flexible and united. Let’s be learners. And let’s have some fun along the way.

To that end, I want to share this video with you — featuring our talented BSD students and staff. Special thanks to Jacob Wismer music teacher Kelly Angle for writing the lyrics to the song, Mountainside band director Jeremy Zander for mixing the soundtrack, and videographer Kara Yunck for shooting and editing the video.

Again, welcome to a new school year!
