Community Conversation Around Race

Wednesday, April 6, 2022 4:30 to 6:30 p.m

Registration is now open for the Third Annual Community Conversations Around Race.  This year’s conversation will be a virtual event and consist of two parts, a Student Roundtable Discussion from 4:30-5:30 followed by a Racial Affinity Space Conversation from 5:35-6:30

REGISTRATION CLOSES AT NOON ON APRIL 6, 2022

The Student Roundtable Discussion will elevate high school students' voices, sharing their personal narratives and experiences while allowing the listeners to lean into their own racial literacy.  Racial literacy is the knowledge, skills, and awareness needed to talk thoughtfully about race and racism, with the goal of eradicating racism.

The Racial Affinity Space will be an opportunity for participants to reflect on their learning from the student panel and engage in discussions based on their racial identity.

Racial Literacy:  It is a concept developed by sociology professor France Twine from her research in the UK with mixed race families.  The concept describes “a set of practices designed by parents and others to teach their children how to recognize, respond to and counter forms of everyday racism.  The emphasis on teaching children as well as adults how to identify routine forms of racism and to develop strategies for countering it and coping with it.” To learn more, please consider watching the TED Talk by Priya Vulchi and Winona Guo, "What it takes to be racially literate"

Racial Affinity (Caucus):  "A caucus is an intentionally created space for those who share an identity to convene for learning, support, and connections. Caucuses based on racial identity are often comprised, respectively, of people of color, white people, people who hold multiracial identities, or people who share specific racial or ethnic identities."  Racial Equity Tools

The event will take place via zoom.  An email will be sent to all registrants on the day of the event with the agenda, including links.  We thank you for your interest in joining us on April 6, 2022, from 4:30-6:30 pm.
