Employee Satisfaction

Based on employee satisfaction, Beaverton School District has been selected by Forbes magazine for its America’s Best-in-State Employers 2024 list. BSD was the only school district recognized in the top 10 list of employers based in Oregon. This is the third year in a row that BSD has been honored on the America’s Best-in-State Employers list.

BSD is a destination school district for educators in Oregon, thanks to our competitive wages, excellent benefits, moderate class sizes, high-quality facilities, exceptional working conditions, diverse families and tremendous community support. By investing in our employees and schools, we invest in providing a top quality education for our students.

Class Sizes

In BSD, we’re fortunate to have moderate class sizes, thanks in part to a voter-supported, 5-year  local option levy that pays for about 300 teaching positions.

We use an equity-based staffing model that provides more resources to schools based on the percentage of students experiencing poverty, so class sizes are smaller in schools where there are greater student needs.

Beaverton’s elementary class sizes, in particular, are small and compare favorably with other districts. Middle and high school class sizes are impacted by negotiated teacher plan time, making them larger than elementary classes. BSD secondary school teachers have student contact during six out of eight class periods — teaching their subject areas during five classes and supporting students in WIN, advisory or access tutorial classes during one class period. The remaining two periods are plan time. (FLEX Online and option school teachers also have two planning periods.) This means that for every class period, only three-fourths of teachers are available to teach, so each class is larger than if all teachers were available.

Things to know about the data:

  • The data does not include students in self-contained special education programs, which have even lower class sizes.
  • Middle and high school data does not include courses with 10 students or fewer, such as Peer Mentors.
  • Students in option schools and FLEX Online School have been included at the appropriate grade levels.

Teacher Plan Time

During teacher preparation time, or “plan time,” teachers prepare lessons, grade assignments, attend meetings and collaborate with colleagues to better serve our students. Plan time is negotiated with BEA and built into the daily schedule — part of it during the student day and part during the teacher workday outside of school hours.

While details and definitions vary from district to district, BSD guarantees teachers substantially more plan time than other school districts.

Facility Investments

In BSD, we’re fortunate to have a voter-supported, $723 million bond that will finance continued facilities improvements through 2028. The District has made substantial investments in key areas since 2020 that benefit all our staff and students:
