2015-17 High School Boundary Adjustment Process - Phase III

The School Board unanimously approved Superintendent Don Grotting's High School Boundary recommendation at a special Business Meeting on Monday, October 17, 2016.

Principals of the District's soon to be six comprehensive high schools presented their plans for working with students, parents and communities to develop transition plans for students who will attend new schools next year. Included in their planning are elements such as communicating with feeder systems to ensure students and families feel welcome in their new high schools and offering curriculum and informational nights at each of the schools to allow students to become familiar with them. There will be consistency in the forecasting process this winter to ensure students are familiar with and prepared to select courses at their new schools.

Additionally, athletic and activity coaches and advisors are working collaboratively to ensure all students at all of the high schools have access to courses and programs in which they wish to participate. There will be opportunities for students to meet coaches, advisors and teachers throughout the winter and spring.

Members of the High School Boundary Adjustment Committee met on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 to give their input about the latest map with the areas of consideration and review public input from five recent listening sessions.

There will be a Special School Board Business Meeting on Monday October 17, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Administration Center, for the School Board to receive the High School Boundary Adjustment decision from Superintendent Don Grotting. This is a public meeting with an opportunity for public comment.

August 22, 2016: Revised High School Boundary Map

The Beaverton School District has released a revised high school boundary map (scroll to see the map with areas of consideration) that is reflective of the recommendation from the High School Adjustment Committee and four areas of consideration for potential change. These four areas include:

#1: Portion of Aloha-Huber Park K-8
#2: Portion of McKinnley Elementary School
#3 & 4: Portions of Elmonica Elementary School

The map is accompanied by a description of the four areas of consideration, including rationale from the Committee for its recommendation and the trade-offs that would be associated with changing the committee's recommended attendance boundary.

The process for concluding the high school adjustment will include the following steps:

  1. Five public input sessions (one at each comprehensive high school) on the proposed boundary map. All public comment will be welcome.
  2. Review of the public input with District staff, the High School Boundary Adjustment Committee and Superintendent Don Grotting.
  3. Possible revision to and creation of a final map.
  4. Superintendent Don Grotting submits his recommended map and criteria report to the Beaverton School Board for review and final adoption in October.

At the School Board business meeting Monday, August 1, 2016, staff members presented information requested by Board members on the two areas of proximity and transportation costs. That information can be found in the Board Packet. Board members requested additional information including how the District staff arrived at the travel times listed, as well as definitions of the terminology used and updated information on capacity and enrollment projections.

The District Technical Team will work to compile the requested information, before releasing an updated map. The information and map will be published for immediate public feedback.

A series of open-house style meetings, with an opportunity for public testimony, will be conducted at each of the five comprehensive high schools in early September to gather feedback on any changes. The dates of these public meetings have not yet ben set.

The goal is to bring forward a new proposal to the School Board at the September 26, 20216 business meeting.
