Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Information
The Beaverton School District offers tow Advanced Programs - Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB). Both AP and IB provide high school students with an opportunity to engage in challenging collee-level work. Students who demonstrate mastery of learning targets in the freshman and sophomore yer of high school are usually well-prepared or AP and IB courses. The counseling office at each high school provides resources that will help students to learn more about advanced programs and to determine if advanced courses are a good match with their academic plan.
Advanced Placement
Since its inception in 1955, the Advanced Placement Program has provided motivated high school students with the opportunity to take college-level courses in a high school setting. Students who participate in the program not only gain college-level skills but in many cases, they also earn college credit while they are still in high school. Advanced Placement (AP) is for students in 9th - 12th grades.
AP courses are rigorous and require students to develop strong organizational, research, and time-management skills. Students participating in AP can take classes in a variety of subjects or concentrate their studies in one or two subject areas. AP courses are taught by dedicated high school teachers who follow course guidelines developed and published by the College Board. The program is strengthened by their participation in professional development workshops and summer institutes.
Each high school in Beaverton that offers AP classes selects which courses will be offered in a given year. Please consult your high school's Program Planning Guide. While AP permits students to take exams as 9th graders, it is up to each high school in Beaverton to determine course offerings and sequences, and therefore in which grade students may enroll in an AP course.
Students seeking college credit for taking an AP course must register for and take an external exam for the course. AP currently offers 33 exams in 19 subjects, not all of which are offered at every school. Students who earn a 3 or higher on AP exams can receive college credit. Each college or university has its own policies for credit, which are subject to change, and these are often posted on the school's website.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Program
Established in 1968, the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program provides motivated high school students with the opportunity to engage in a rigorous and comprehensive course of studies during grades 11 and 12. The full DP curriculum includes courses in six subject groups - language and literature, language acquisition (world language), individuals and societies (social studies), sciences, mathematics, and the arts. Students may earn college credit based on their IB exam scores.
IB courses are rigorous and require students to develop strong organizational, research, and time-management skills. Students participating in IB can take classes in all six IB subject areas toward earning an IB diploma or concentrate their studies in one or two subject areas. IB courses are taught by dedicated high school teachers who follow course guidelines developed and published by the International Baccalaureate Organization. The program is strengthened by their participation in professional development workshops and summer institutes.

While IB permits students to take exams as 11th graders, it is up to each high school to determine course offerings and sequence, and therefore in which grade students may enroll in an IB course.

Each college or university has its own policies for credit, which are subject to change, and these are often posted on the school's website. Students who receive the full IB Diploma are often eligible to enroll in an Oregon college or university as sophomores. Students who do not earn a full diploma, but test in some subjects and earn a 5 or higher can receive college credit for work in that subject.
