The Beaverton School District Wellness Policy states the following:

Classroom Snacks, Parties, and School Celebrations 

All foods offered on the school campus should meet the nutrition standards set by the USDA and the Oregon Smart Snacks Standards.  This includes, but is not limited to, celebrations, parties, classroom snacks brought by parents, rewards and incentives.

Foods Sold to Students 

All foods and beverages sold to students on the school campus during the school day, also called Competitive Foods, must meet or exceed Oregon Smart Snacks Standards. 

Competitive foods are all foods and beverages sold to students on the School Campus during the School Day, that are not part of a reimbursable meal under the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs. These foods compete with nutritionally balanced school meals. This includes:

• A la carte food sales
• Student stores/coffee bars
• Fundraising
• Vending machines

The law specifies that the nutrition standards shall apply to all foods sold:

• Outside the school meal programs;
• On the school campus; and
• At any time during the school day.

Improving the nutritional profile of all foods sold in school is critical to:

• improving diet and overall health of American children;
• ensuring children from all income levels adopt healthful eating habits that will enable them to live productive lives; and
• helping children make healthier choices and reducing their risk of obesity.

The standards apply on the school campus during the school day.

The school campus is defined as all areas of the property under the jurisdiction of the school that are accessible to students during the school day.

The school day is defined as the period from the midnight before, through extended school hours for activities such as clubs, yearbook, athletic practices, band, and drama rehearsals.

Standards do not apply at athletic events, theater performances and recitals or other evening gatherings where parents/community members are significant parts of the audience.

The District’s Local Wellness Policy leadership monitors building compliance throughout the year.  The Oregon Department of Education conducts site visits, reviews the Local Wellness Policy documentation, Triennial Assessments, and Oregon Smart Snack calculators for each food item, during the Nutrition Departments Administrative Review (State Audit) for the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program.

If the food is intended to be eaten at school then it should be compliant, if the food is intended to be consumed at home it is exempt from these standards.

Yes, if the products will be served or sold to students during the school day, they should meet these standards.

Yes, this is allowed. To be compliant at the elementary level, smoothies should be made from only fruit and juice, and be no larger than 8oz.

Look for nonfat frozen yogurt where the first ingredient is skim milk. US Foods ChefStore has multiple Beaverton locations and sells a 3-gallon bucket of compliant vanilla frozen yogurt which provides roughly 96 1/2 cup servings. 

Yes, any 100% juice popsicle or freezer pop will likely be compliant.

Yes, coffee and tea are considered allowable beverages at the high school level provided they are within certain size and calorie limits. 

Per Smart Snacks guidelines, drinks must meet calorie standards for either:

• "Other" flavored beverages: ≤ 12 oz and ≤ 60 calories (≤ 5 calories/oz)

• Low or no calorie beverages: ≤ 20 oz and ≤ 10 calories (≤ 0.5 calories/oz)
