Understanding Broadcast Types

There are various broadcast types that BSD uses to communicate with families. Below is an overview of each type.

School Hours Emergency

Emergency notifications sent during school hours.

Non-School Hours Emergency

Emergency notifications sent before or after school hours. This includes inclement weather alerts.

Attendance (Considered High Priority Call)

Daily notification to parents/guardians of their child’s unexcused absences.

BSD Priority Message (Considered High Priority Call)

Priority calls from departments at the District such as Communications & Community Involvement.

BSD Briefs

District Newsletter emails sent to parents and staff on a weekly basis. General Announcements to inform parents/staff of upcoming events, reminders, school newsletters, etc.

Nutrition Services

Notification sent to parents/guardians with low/negative meal balances.

Survey (Not Enabled)

This feature will be turned on in a future phase and will allow schools or the District to send out surveys.

Classroom Messaging

Classroom Messaging allows teachers to quickly send parents an update about their student's behavior and progress in school.

For student safety, at least one phone number is required for School Hours Emergency, Non School Hours Emergency and Attendance messages.

SMS (Text) Messages

In addition to SchoolMessenger emails and phone calls, BSD utilizes SMS (text) messages to send short, important notices to families.

In order to receive text messages, parents/guardians must opt in with their cell phone.

Sign Up for SMS Messages

Your current mobile number must be on file in your child’s school records. Using your cell phone, subscribe or opt-in to receive SMS by texting the word “YES” to 67587.

Once the mobile number has been successfully subscribed, a confirmation message will be delivered to your cell phone.

SMS FAQs

Am I required to opt in?

No, participation is optional; however, we encourage you to try it. Your child’s school may choose to use this communication medium for quick notifications and reminders. The District will use it for emergency broadcasts, inclement weather alerts, and reunification process or to publish District-wide system issues.

I opted-in, why didn't I get a text confirming my registration?

Please contact the main office at your child’s school to confirm that your cell phone number is listed correctly and other criteria are setup properly to send you notifications.

Do I have to re-subscribe if my cell phone number changes?

Yes, please be sure to update your phone number with your child’s school first. Next, opt-in again to 67587 using your new cell phone.

Will I be charged for the text messages that I receive from SchoolMessenger?

SchoolMessenger does not charge recipients for the text messages that they send out; however, wireless providers may charge for individual text messages depending on the wireless plan.

Can I select what types of messages I want to receive via SMS once I opt-in?

Yes, you can modify your communication preferences within the SchoolMessenger mobile app (iOS and Android) or online at go.schoolmessenger.com.

Both allow you to review messages received in the last 30 days and select your notification preferences for each of the various broadcast types (school hours emergency, non-school hours emergency, attendance, general announcements, etc.).
