Beginning with the class of 2027, the Oregon Diploma and Modified Diploma 24 credit graduation requirement will include:

BACKGROUND
What has the State of Oregon done to arrive at these new graduation requirements?

In the Winter of 2022, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) partnered with Oregon’s Kitchen Table (OKT) to conduct a broad and inclusive statewide community engagement process related to Oregon’s high school graduation requirements.

ODE used the input gathered during that process to inform a set of recommendations to the legislature regarding high school graduation requirements.

Responding directly to community input, ODE recommended that the legislature add a future planning course and a personal financial education course to the required curriculum.

In 2023, the Oregon Legislature passed Senate Bill 3
-
Beginning with the class of 2027, the Oregon Diploma and Modified Diploma 24 credit requirement will include a 0.5 credit in Personal Financial Education and a 0.5 credit in Higher Education and Career Path Skills, as part of the total credit requirements.

Between December 2023 and April 2024, the Oregon Department of Education partnered with Oregon’s Kitchen Table (OKT) to inform the development of instructional standards for these two requirements, with a particular focus on students who have experienced educational disparities.
What has the Beaverton School District done to prepare for implementation of the SB 3 requirements?

During the 2022-2023 school year, the Beaverton School District (BSD) embarked on a community-wide process to develop a strategic plan to guide the district’s work for the next five years.

Does this new requirement impact students earning a Modified Diploma?

Yes. Students earning a Modified Diploma are held to the same standards as those earning the Oregon Diploma.

Students are required to complete a 0.5 credit in PFE and 0.5 in HECPS.

These credits will be earned as part of the total 24 credits required for the Modified Diploma.
Does this requirement impact students earning an Extended Diploma or certificate of attendance?

No. The 12 credits required to achieve an Extended Diploma does not include either of these credits.

Students earning a Certificate of Attendance do not have any specific course requirements to meet these new diploma requirements.
Do students in specialized programs (such as Structured Routines Center, Academic Learning Center, Independent Skills Center) need to take these courses?

Students earning a regular Diploma or Modified Diploma must meet these new credit requirements

Students earning an Extended Diploma or a Certificate of Attendance do not have to meet these new diploma requirements.
What Credit Recovery options will be available to students not passing the courses?

As with all BSD high school subject area graduation requirements, credit recovery options will be offered.

Credit Recovery options will be identified and developed during the 2025-26 school year and offered beginning 2026-27.
What options are there for students enrolled in district programs (such as IB, AVID, ACMA, ISB) that have a current education plan with no space to add an additional class?

Students and families should work with their counselor to determine what options are available best for their individual situation.
