6-8 Math
Beginning 2026-2027 school year, BSD will shift to a grade-level math sequence for middle school students, with opportunities for advanced placement. This change aligns with practices in neighboring districts and supports long-term student success.
What We’ve Been Doing
Since 2016, most BSD middle schools have used an accelerated math model. Students were placed into Math 6/7 and Math 7/8, which compressed multiple courses into one. While this approach aimed to provide opportunities for all students to take math at an accelerated rate, the pace often led to students entering high school without a strong foundation and resulted in a need to repeat Algebra/Geometry/Statistics 1.
Why We’re Making a Change
After reviewing student achievement data and consulting with educators, we found:
- Accelerated courses covered 150% of grade-level content with less instructional time.
- Students missed key math concepts, impacting long-term success.
- High school math success rates did not significantly improve under the accelerated model, and course repetition rates increased significantly.
What This Means for Your Student
This change will ensure every student receives deeper instruction in essential math concepts, building a stronger foundation for future learning. Starting next school year:
- Students will take grade-level math (Math 6, Math 7, Math 8).
- Students currently taking Math 5 will take Math 6 next year.
- Students currently taking Math 6/7 will take Math 7 next year.
- Students currently taking Math 7/8 will take Math 8 next year.
- Students who demonstrate proficiency can still advance to higher-level courses through math advancement testing.
- Summa students will default to Math 7 in sixth grade with the option to test into Math 8.
We believe this new sequence will better support all learners and prepare them for success in high school and beyond.
