9-12 Math
New High School Math Pathway Coming in 2026-2027
The Change
Beginning next school year, BSD will offer Algebra 1 and Geometry courses instead of Algebra/Geometry/Statistics (“AGS”) 1 and 2 courses. The following year we will begin offering Algebra 2 instead of AGS 3.
What We’ve Been Doing
A committee of high school math teachers, principals, and counselors reviewed student data, Oregon’s 2021 Math Standards, and researched course offerings in other districts around the state and nation to find the most effective course options for our students.
Why We’re Making a Change
- Consistency: Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 (A|G|A) courses better align with districts locally and nationally, helping students who move into or out of BSD.
- Student Success: Algebra and Geometry courses are distinct rather than sequential (like AGS 1→ AGS 2). This can increase potential for students to experience success in each course.
- Opportunity: The Geometry course provides opportunities for students who may wish to double enroll in Geometry and Algebra 2.
What This Means for Your Student
- Our current 8th graders in AGS 1 will take Algebra 1 or Geometry next year, depending on criteria for 9th grade placement.
- 9th grade students currently taking AGS 1, and ready to move on, will take Geometry next year.
- This shift does not impact students in AGS 2 or higher. Please refer to your high school’s Academic Planning Guide for details.
We believe this change to our math courses will better support all learners and prepare them for success in high school and beyond.
