Manufacturing I

The course will provide students the opportunity to learn skills, processes, and career opportunities related to manufacturing technologies. The Manufacturing I course is offered on a double-block. Course work in the Manufacturing I course will introduce students to careers in high-tech manufacturing by producing products to industrial standards utilizing current manual and computer-aided machine tool technologies. Students will complete hands-on projects using a combination of manual and power equipment while applying quality control techniques to achieve the final product. This course prepares students for post-high school options in manufacturing and engineering careers such as industrial designer, assembler, welder, machine operator, manufacturing/process engineer, and CNC machinist.

Manufacturing 2 

All students in grades 11-12 are welcome to attend Westview for the Manufacturing Program of Study. This course will provide students the opportunity to build upon skills and processes learned in the Manufacturing 1 course. Students will continue to explore career opportunities related to manufacturing technologies. The Manufacturing 2 course is offered on a double-block, similar to other magnet programs in Beaverton. Course work in the Manufacturing 2 course will prepare students for careers in high-tech manufacturing by producing products to industrial standards utilizing current manual and computer-aided machine tool technologies. Students will complete hands-on projects using a combination of manual and power equipment while applying quality control techniques to achieve the final product. Custom products will be designed and produced by students in the manufacturing program. Students will play an active role in a school-based business with the goal of providing professional quality products to their clients in the school and community. This course prepares students for post-high school options in manufacturing and engineering careers such as an industrial designer, assembler, welder, machine operator, manufacturing/process engineer, and CNC machinist.

Robotics I

This class is a basic introduction to robotics. Using the Legos NXT robotics kits, students will learn to build and program robotic units to complete specific challenges.  Students will have the opportunity to compete in a District-wide competition.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) I

This class is designed for those students interested in engineering, architecture, 3D drawings, animation, coding and other careers that involve computer designing.  As an introduction to computer designing, this class will teach the fundamentals of drafting and sketching. Students will have the opportunity to learn the basic principles of Mechanical, Architectural, Graphic, Animation, and 3D design by using current Autodesk designing software.  Students will select the design programs relevant to their area of interest and learn the basic functions of each program. Students will design and manufacture products using 3D printers, vinyl plotters, CNC mill and laser cutters, screen printers and heat transfer equipment. Software programs include:  AutoCAD 2012, AutoCAD Mechanical, Civil, Inventor, Revit, 3DS Max, Sketch Book, Cede Academy and Honor Code.

Creative Design 101

Students will use 3-D printers, vinyl-cutters, and CNC routers and lasers to create products out of plastic, vinyl, glass, and wood such as jewelry, fobs, toys, cell phone cases, assorted parts, models, tools, signs, and decals. Product design options are student-led. The course will provide students with knowledge and skills related to manufacturing technologies from conception to production. Students will design and develop prototypes, managed a production plan, and manufacture useful products.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) II

The next level after Computer Design 1, students will enhance their pathway interest (engineering, architecture, software design, animation, manufacturing, etc.)  The CAD 2 student will select a specific technology area and related software program to be used during the semester (architecture, mechanical engineering, 3D modeling, animation).  Working in a hands-on format, the CAD 2 student will enhance understanding and application of the Autodesk software. Students will design and manufacture products using 3D printers, vinyl plotters, CNC mill and laser cutters, screen printers and heat transfer equipment. This class will require students to use higher-level skills to complete selected projects.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) III

Students in this class will engage in advanced projects that require a higher specialized level of understanding and mastery of the software used in Computer Design 2.  Students will design and manufacture products using 3D printers, vinyl plotters, CNC mill and laser cutters, screen printers and heat transfer equipment. Students will work independently or in small groups.  Projects are chosen by the students with teacher approval.

Robotics II

This course will enhance engineering, design and mechanical skills learned in Robotics 1. Students will use Legos Tetrix, EV3 and VEX robotic kits to complete various tasks and challenges. Students will be using coding and programing language and will have the opportunity to join our Westview Robotics team.

Creative Design 102

Students will use a variety of tools and equipment to create products out of metals, ceramics, resin and wood expanding on their knowledge from Creative Design 101. Product design options are student-led and team-oriented to focus on the soft skills the manufacturing job sector is looking for such as teamwork, critical thinking, collaborative problem-solving and professionalism. The course will provide students with knowledge and skills related to manufacturing technologies from conception to production. Students will design and develop prototypes, managed a production plan, and manufacture useful products with more technical skills and higher difficulty levels than Creative Design 101.

• 0.5 Credits (1 semester)
• 9-12 grade
• WHS students only

 

Manufacturing I and II are open to students across the district. All students can apply by listing the course on their forecasting requests with their home school.  No additional application is needed.  Students will be selected using a lottery process for all students across all high schools.

Advanced students complete a variety of projects for local non-profits and other groups such as adapting items for people with disabilities.
