Introductory Courses
Marketing I
This is an introductory course to prepare students for careers in the marketing and retail field, as well as a business major in college. Students will learn skills in the following marketing areas: store operations, economics, marketing segmentation, product planning, pricing and merchandise math, advertising and promotion, display principles, and entrepreneurship. Students enrolled in a marketing class are eligible to participate in the activities of DECA, an association of marketing and accounting students, as well as work in “The Lair,” Westview’s student store.

Accounting I
Accounting I is an introductory course designed to meet the needs of students who intend to pursue a career in business, whether they are majoring in business in college or intend to enter the job market after graduation. Students acquire an understanding of basic accounting principles and procedures. They also become familiar with accounting terminology, financial records, forms, and statements used for both a service and merchandising business. They will also develop a business plan for a new small business. Students enrolled in an accounting class are eligible to participate in DECA, an association of Marketing and Accounting students, and may also work in “The Lair,” Westview’s student store.

Personal Finance
This course is designed to increase financial literacy and will help students gain control over the financial impact of the choices they make. The topics will focus on employability, career development, budgets, and money management (including credit management, college planning, saving and investing, as well as taxes). Studies in these subjects will assist students in making important life decisions and prepare them to be knowledgeable consumers.

Introduction to Sports Marketing
Students learn the principles of sports and event marketing through textbook concepts, class notes and discussion, Internet research, and completion of a semester-long group project. Students create and manage a professional sports franchise, simulating real-world decisions and tasks of sports marketing business professionals. Decisions include team branding, player acquisition, personnel decisions, market analysis and city selection, stadium location and design, sponsorship and revenue streams, media presentation and merchandising. This class requires a basic awareness of sports teams and athletes.

Fashion and Retail Marketing
This is an introductory course to the retail industry and the merchandising of products and services. It will focus on the evolution and movement of fashion and retail, career development, merchandising, promotion, and business strategy. This course does not include garment design or production.

Business Law
The course offers an overview of the legal environment of business. Students will examine current events in business law as they concern the individual. Topics to be discussed include rules of law that apply to business transactions, contracts, sales transactions, consumer protection, employment and landlord/tenant issues. The scope of the course will include the social responsibilities and the ethical considerations of business and the individuals within business organizations.

Digital Marketing
Students will learn how to utilize current and emerging technology to achieve traditional marketing objectives, including branding, promotion, sales, customer engagement and building effective customer relationships. Focus will be on creative use of social media, mobile and Internet technology as pieces of larger marketing and promotional plans. This hands-on course will cover current trends and best practices, while also encouraging new ideas and applications of technology.

Intermediate / Advanced Courses
Student Store Work Experience
Students work in Westview’s student store, “The Lair,” in order to practice the skills being presented in Marketing as well as Accounting. Students learn business practices such as electronic cash register operations, cash handling procedures, customer service skills, and inventory and stocking principles. Students develop a thorough understanding of all store operations and learn to function productively within a team.

Advanced Accounting
Advanced Accounting is a college accounting course that uses an integrated approach to teach accounting. Students first learn how businesses plan for and evaluate their operating, financing and investing decisions and then how accounting systems gather and provide data to internal and external decision makers. This course covers all the learning objectives of a traditional college level financial and managerial accounting course. Topics include an introduction to accounting, accounting information systems, time value of money, and accounting for merchandising firms, sales and receivables, fixed assets, debt and equity. Other topics include statement of cash flow, financial ratios, cost-volume profit analysis, variance analysis and business plan development. Students must be interested in learning and understanding the financial operations of businesses. Students are expected to participate in DECA activities.

Advertising/Promotion
This course provides students the opportunity to apply product and service promotion concepts to real-world situations. The topics include the psychology of advertising, a study of various media, advertising planning and budgeting, and advertising layout and design principles. Students will apply these concepts as they prepare an advertising campaign, fashion merchandising plan, or sports and entertainment promotion plan for a real product, service, company or business. Students are encouraged to participate in DECA activities.

Marketing II
This course allows second year marketing students the opportunity to apply the skills learned in Marketing I to a “real world” business problem. Each student will study a business and develop a written proposal to solve the marketing problem under consideration This requires students to be self-motivated and to responsibly research, analyze, problem-solve, and develop solutions consistent with business practices and principles. The second semester focuses on the aspects of business in a global environment. Students enrolled in Marketing II are strongly encouraged to participate in DECA activities and may work in “The Lair,” Westview’s student store.

Marketing III
This course builds on concepts introduced in the first two years. It meets the needs of students who wish to further their career interests in the marketing field. It involves an active role in managing Westview’s student store, DECA leadership activities, project-based proposals, and entrepreneurial concepts. Students make decisions, monitor results, and develop an action plan to solve a variety of marketing problems. This course requires time-management skills, responsibility, and initiative. Students enrolled in Marketing III are expected to participate in DECA activities.

Additional Opportunities
Students can participate in additional related activities such as:
- Business students can join DECA, a Career and Technical Student Organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. Student members of DECA learn and practice workplace skills through state and international competitions.
- Students have the opportunity to work in Westview’s student store, “The Lair,” in order to practice the skills being presented in Marketing as well as Accounting. Students develop a thorough understanding of all store operations and learn to function productively within a team. Advanced students manage the finances for The Lair and the WHS Yearbook.
