Erin Miles, Principal Fir Grove Elementary School
Erin Miles, Principal at Fir Grove Elementary School, always knew she wanted to be a teacher. "When I was six years old, everybody in my neighborhood brought their school workbooks home for the summer – so that is what we did – we had some student desks at our friend's house and we worked on and corrected our workbooks – a whole group of us girls – so I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher."
"My absolute favorite thing about my job is seeing inside the classrooms – going into a fifth-grade math classroom and seeing all the learning the kids are doing, I love it! it energizes me," says Miles.
Born and raised in Oregon, Miles began her career in the Beaverton School District in 2001 teaching English as a Second Language at Greenway Elementary School. Aside from a one-year stint in Georgia, her entire career has been in the Beaverton School District. Last year, she was Principal at Arco Iris Spanish Immersion School.
Miles is an avid reader who loves history. "My favorite subject to teach is History. When I was a fifth-grade teacher, we studied the American Revolution and that was so much fun to teach," says Miles. "Each student took on a character from the American Revolution and we created video clips. Students wrote introductions for their summaries every time we did a big event and by the end, they each had a giant book about the American Revolution, written by themselves."
In her spare time, Miles enjoys reading and spending time with her husband and three children who enjoy taking road trips to visit family. Her favorite book of all time is Anne of Green Gables.
