Jared Freeman, Meadow Park Middle School
"I think when you are a principal, you have a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on a wide range of people, whether it's students, staff or the community. As you are working to implement and change things, you hopefully are building a stronger community that people can be proud of. That is my favorite part of my job," says Jared Freeman, Principal at Meadow Park Middle School.
From a small town south of Spokane, Jared got his grit for working in a middle school from his first job as the only employee working the evening shift at Sparky's Firehouse Subs. "It was challenging; it was one of those shops where you had to actually slice the meat for each sandwich. I would look at the line of 20 customers and think…I have to do this all myself, take their orders, ring them up and make the sandwiches. It was also a little scary, I would bribe my friends with free sandwiches to hang out after we closed to make sure no one was hiding in the bathroom," jokes Jared.
Jared majored in math at Pacific University and continued on to receive his Masters in Teaching degree. Before becoming an administrator, Jared taught high school Math, two years in Arizona, and five years at Beaverton High School. With encouragement from colleagues an administrators, Jared acquired his Administration Degree from Lewis & Clark and became an assistant principal at Parkrose High School. "I actually hadn't ever thought about being and administrator, it was really just a cascade of opportunities that I took advantage of, and I have been really lucky," states Jared.
In his free time, Jared enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, one son and four daughters. They enjoy family vacations and traveling together.
When asked what his favorite thing about Meadow Park was, Jared replied, "My favorite thing about Meadow Park is that there is so much going on, there is the Middle Years Program (MYP, Two-Way Immersion (TWI), Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and a Collaborative Co-Teaching model. I had a lot of AVID experience, but the other programs were all new to me. It has been so great to learn about all the great things happening here at Meadow Park. I really enjoy learning and growing and stepping into my work here has been fun."
