Fork It Over Food Donation Program
"Fork it Over!" is a program developed by the Beaverton School District Nutrition Services Department adopting the popular name that Portland Metro has used in the past for the food gleaning and donation program. These programs seek to reduce hunger and waste in the Portland Oregon Region by coordinating organizations that have food to donate with food rescue agencies, like the Sunshine Pantry, Rock Creek Church Pantry, and a local soup kitchen.
The Fork it Over program ensures that wholesome edible leftover food goes to people in need instead of landing in the trash. Historically, parents and neighbors have volunteered to transport food to local emergency pantries each week that school is in session. Since January, 2017, Waste Not Food Taxi has coordinated volunteer drivers and pickups.
Waste Not Food Taxi, growing rapidly, has enlisted the help of Food Rescue US, a free app available for Apple and Android devices. Interested parties can sign up with the app, and then they can view all the rescues that need drivers. Those who choose to drive for Beaverton schools will also be asked to complete a free background check, since they'll be visiting our school campuses.
Food rescue agencies maintain well-defined protocols for ensuring the safe and efficient collection and distribution of donated food. Donation is safe, simple and the right thing to do. Packaged and whole food is delivered to Sunshine Pantry in downtown Beaverton and to The Pantry at Rock Creek near Westview High School. The rest is made into hearty soups and stews, served to people in need. Waste Not Food Taxi, Food Rescue US and the pantries that receive school food donations are nonprofit organizations, donating food is free from liability under the federal Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Act.
