WE Collaborate: Week 3
The Teaching & Learning Department has developed Week 3, Educator Created and Led Professional Development which will provide a variety of collaboration and professional development opportunities on the third Wednesday of each month during early release. These opportunities may include courses that offer Professional Development Unit (PDU) credits that count toward teacher licensure, cross-building collaboration, or webinars.
At Westview High School, high school teachers from across the District explored how their experiences, attitudes, values, and biases about race, language, culture, gender, and class impact their experiences as educators at a Culturally Relevant Teaching workshop.
At Five Oaks Middle School, teachers from Five Oaks and Stoller middle schools had the opportunity to collaborate on the creation of sketchbooks for working with students individually or in small groups on writing and reading skills. A sketchbook is a tool that is personal, active and responsive to students to teach specific skills or address specific problems in the moment.
The group of five discussed the problems students in their classes are having with various writing and reading learning targets and how to create pages in their sketchbooks that will address these problems in real time. They added brightly colored words, pictures and included post-it notes for students to take away specific examples to use in their own writing.
With the exception of the first Wednesday of each month, all other Wednesdays are for staff-directed collaboration and professional development. Week 3 will support teachers with a multitude of opportunities to deepen their practice.
