Athletic Trainer

Purpose:

Provides specialized athletic training services to student athletes as a member of the athletic health care team in consultation with a licensed physician in accordance with state practice act.  Athletic training services include:  wellness and injury/illness prevention, initial screening and evaluation, immediate and emergency care, treatment, and rehabilitation which may include modalities as well as developing treatment programs for injured athletes.

Nature & Scope:

The Athletic Trainer is present at practices and games to provide evaluation, assessment, prevention, and rehabilitation of athlete’s injuries and care. The Athletic Trainer is a member of the athletic health care team in consultation with a licensed physician. The nature of the work requires adherence to policies, procedures, and regulations including established medical procedures and federal and state laws. The incumbent works independently and interfaces daily with coaches, school staff, student/athletes, parents, and other healthcare professionals. Because this job involves frequent interactions and quick decision-making in stressful situations the position requires a high level of professional decorum, calm, and ability to act as a role model to young people.

Essential Job Functions:   

  1. Conducts oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest traditions of public education and in support of the District’s mission.
  2. Researches, plans, implements, and ensures that appropriate action plans are in place to prevent athletic injury and illness and that these action plans are in accordance with other established athletic policies and procedures as well as state law.  
  3. Serves as a resource for coaches in order to select appropriate team protective equipment and devices.
  4. Attends multisport athletic contests and practices as scheduled with the Athletic Director. Observes participating athletes to evaluate movement patterns and body      mechanics that could predispose athletes to injury. Responds to injuries/illnesses that occur as a result of participating in activities and/or events.
  5. Serves as a liaison to parents, coaches, school staff and healthcare professionals regarding an individual athlete’s injury or illness.
  6. Participates in the development of a comprehensive athletic injury and illness prevention program, including researching, planning, and implementing appropriate strategies to decrease injuries and illnesses.
  7. Conducts initial assessment of an athlete's injury or illness to determine a professional diagnosis, activity limitation or restrictions, develop a treatment plan, and/or to determine whether the athlete should be referred to physicians for further diagnostic testing and treatment.
  8. Provides education to students and parents in the areas of sports injury prevention and care.
  9. Uses Student Information System to create a database for quick reference of emergency contact information for each team.
  10. Advises athletes on the proper use of equipment. Provides on–site rehabilitation services for athletic injuries using various therapeutic interventions.
  11. Accompanies injured athletes to hospitals, when possible.
  12. Assesses athletes to evaluate the efficacy of an athlete’s treatment, reports the progress to coaches and physicians when appropriate, and makes modifications to the athlete’s treatment program as needed.   
  13. Keeps confidential, accurate training records, including injury/accident reports and treatment notes.
  14. Develops and maintains inventory for the athletic training room adhering to budget provided.
  15. Schedule, plan, and participate in district sponsored pre-participation sports physicals.
  16. Assesses playing arenas in order to prevent any harmful situations for athletes. Monitors environmental conditions to decrease the risk of environmental illness due to heat, cold, lightening, air quality and wind.  Helps enforce guidelines from the National Federation of High School Athletic Associations (NFSHS) and the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) with regards to hazardous weather recommendations.
  17. Schedules and administers preseason neuropsychological testing and helps interpret post injury tests.
  18. Responsible for concussion management, including notifying school personnel, communicating with outside medical professionals and parents.
  19. Assesses wrestler body composition in conjunction with Oregon’s Wrestling Weight Monitoring Program to determine minimum wrestling weight.
  20. Maintains effective working relationships with other members of the Department as well as other school personnel and community members, including those from diverse cultures or backgrounds or those who speak limited or no English.
  21. Complies with all procedures outlined in the Code of Professional Conduct and Annual Notices for Education Practitioners, Teachers, Support Staff, Administrators, Substitutes Handbook; and all other Beaverton School District Policies and Procedures.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Must possess a Bachelor degree in athletic training or a related field. Experience as an athletic trainer and administering and interpreting neurophysiological testing is desired.
  2. Must possess Athletic Trainer certification by Board of Certification (BOC).
  3. Must possess an Emergency Cardiac Care Certification: including adult, pediatric, secondary rescuer, AED, airway obstruction and barrier devices.
  4. Possession of or ability to obtain, a valid athletic trainer registration by the Oregon Health Authority/Health Licensing Office.
  5. Possession of or ability to become a Certified Wrestling Body Composition Assessor from the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA)
  6. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must read, understand, and follow multi-step written and verbal instructions in English.
  7. Must possess an Oregon or Washington Driver’s License.
  8. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

Working Conditions:

Work activities may include bending, stooping, and kneeling. May be required to lift up to 20 pounds. Regular physical activities and body movements when guiding athletic activities and leading stretching exercises; frequently observes activities to evaluate athletic movements; may require lifting when administering first aid. May be required to communicate in a variety of environmental settings; frequently focuses on a computer screen. Requires attendance at meetings or activities outside of normal working hours, including travels to event sites.
