AV/Data Communication Technician

POSITION PURPOSE:

Performs field and shop maintenance, repair and installation of paging systems, intercoms, and clocks.
Provides tier one support for computers, software, and other related technology, and provides general assistance to users.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

The AV Technician receives general supervision from the Department Supervisor, and day-to-day direction from a senior level. Works independently and follows standard procedures to solve problems of limited difficulty and complexity.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Analyze and repair audio visual equipment, TV’s, over heads, stereo systems and/or computer hardware and network communication devises; uses test equipment and tools; installs replacement parts as needed.
  2. Assures proper installation of data communications equipment, including microcomputers, terminals, printers, modems and network interface units; connects appropriate cables to equipment; runs test to ensure proper working order.
  3. Analyze and repair public address and intercom systems; repairs and services master clocks; program bell schedule; reprograms and adjusts mechanical and electrical systems. 
  4. Maintains files of service manuals and operating instructions for all audio visual and computer equipment.
  5. Provides general end user support and problem resolution, including; desktop/laptop operating systems and district application software; computer hardware; printer configuration and connectivity; projectors; PDA’s; and internet use. 
  6. Responsible for general maintenance and troubleshooting of desktop and laptop operating systems and applications. 
  7. Responsible for physical installation, basic setup and configuration of computer and peripheral hardware (e.g. printers, scanners, projectors).
  8. Provides tier one support and training in use of computer hardware and software applications, including providing basic documentation.
  9. Setup microphones for board and budget meetings.
  10. Prepares estimates of labor, time and costs of proposed projects. 
  11. Prepares work records, inventory records and reports.
  12. Provides back-up support to other positions in case of absence or work overload.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • Familiar with the Raulands Paging System program
  • Familiar with Simplex and Primex clock systems
  • Methods, materials and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of audio/visual, computer and computer related equipment.
  • Data communication systems
  • Work hazards and safety precautions.

Skills/Ability to:

  • Communicate effectively with other employees and using tact, courtesy and good judgment.
  • Work with accuracy and attention to detail to meet deadlines.
  • Understand and execute oral and written instructions, policies and procedures.
  • Operate and maintain equipment and hand and power tools used in audio visual and computer maintenance and building maintenance.
  • May require the ability to use hand, power and heavy equipment used in grounds and facilities maintenance.
  • Plan, coordinate and perform audio visual and computer equipment and skilled building maintenance work in area of assignment.
  • Read and understand instruction manuals, blueprints, plans and drawings.
  • Estimate time, labor and materials required for building maintenance projects.
  • Prepare accurate records and reports.
  • Physically perform assigned duties.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is appropriate. A representative way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

  • High school diploma AND
  • Completion of trade school or equivalent with special training in electronic equipment repair AND
  • Two years of experience in computer/electronic equipment maintenance repair and technical experience maintaining and troubleshooting computer workstation, operating systems, applications and peripherals.
  • Two-year Associates Degree in Computer/Technology Sciences preferred.

LICENSING/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of or ability to obtain, a valid Oregon or Washington driver’s license.
  • May be required to obtain a LBME or greater.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work may be performed indoors or outdoors. Travel is required. Incumbent must be able to stand, walk, drive, sit, push, pull, lift up to 55lbs and more with assistance, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, write, speak, and hear.
Employees are exposed to electricity, shop tools and equipment.
