Network Engineer I​​​

Information Technology Department

Purpose:

The Network Engineer I implements, monitors, and maintains test and production network infrastructure, providing system level support for local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), network servers, and end-user computer workstations. The Engineer is also responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of procedures to ensure security, integrity, and availability of core information systems.

Nature & Scope:

The Network Engineer I performs work of a specific nature under general supervision. The nature of the work requires adherence to standard procedures, as well as policies and regulations. Independent judgment and decision making is required in matters not having established procedures. As a member of the Information Technology Department, the Network Engineer I engages with highly sensitive information and must maintain absolute integrity of systems and confidentiality of classified data. Although the Network Engineer I does not have supervisory responsibilities, the incumbent interfaces with numerous employees across the district at all levels of the organization.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Conducts oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest traditions of public education and in support of the District’s mission.
  2. Assists with the administration of the District wired and wireless local area networks and related active electronic components, including installation and configuration of routers, switches, and other network related equipment.
  3. Diagnoses, analyzes, and resolves basic Tier 2 network issues.
  4. Supports District network services (e.g. DHCP, DNS, IP address scopes).
  5. Participates in network maintenance and improvement activities with service providers and outside vendors.
  6. Develops and maintains technical documentation, including LAN specifications and network diagrams; and district workstation and network resources including user information, server and workstation configurations, network cabling, and trouble logs.
  7. Lifts, moves, repositions, and connects light to moderately heavy network and workstation equipment components.
  8. Provides end-user support in the diagnosis of basic network security issues.
  9. Participates in the network design and development for new construction and remodels.
  10. Uses diagnostic tools to troubleshoot networking issues with wired or wireless devices.
  11. Coordinates purchase of network equipment and supplies.
  12. Programs and deploys network switches and wireless access points.
  13. Troubleshoots and resolves issues related to VOIP.
  14. Writes basic technical documentation and provides support and training for various end- users.
  15. Maintains effective working relationships with other members of the Department as well as other school personnel and community members, including those from diverse cultures or backgrounds or those who speak limited or no English.
  16. Complies with all procedures outlined in the Code of Professional Conduct and Annual Notices for Education Practitioners, Teachers, Support Staff, Administrators, Substitutes Handbook; and all other Beaverton School District Policies and Procedures.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems or related field. 

  2. Must possess two years’ experience of deployment and troubleshooting of a large-scale enterprise wired and wireless wide area network system.

  3. In lieu of requirements #1 and #2, must have six years’ combined education (Associate’s Degree/Technical Trade School Certificate/Networking Certifications) and or experience necessary to perform the job related to large scale enterprise wired and wireless wide area network systems.

  4. Must demonstrate knowledge of TCP/IP networking and routing protocols.

  5. Must demonstrate ability to configure and maintain layer 2 and layer 3 devices.

  6. Must demonstrate and understanding of network topology.

  7. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must read, understand, and follow multi-step written and verbal instructions in English.

  8. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.

  9. Must possess an Oregon or Washington Driver’s License.

Working Conditions:

The Network Engineer I, works primarily within schools and office buildings, traveling frequently throughout the District on a daily basis. The work environment is often controlled and quiet, but the work environment will also frequently include moderate to loud noise. The Network Engineer I must be able to lift and move computer equipment, up to 20 pounds on a regular basis and 50 pounds occasionally, without assistance. The incumbent requires regular focus on a computer screen.

The incumbent is required to sit, stand, have finger/hand dexterity for working on computers for extended periods of time. Standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and standing/working on ladders will be required on occasion. The work environment may include exposure to unpleasant interior temperatures, dirt, wetness, and communicable diseases.  Potential exposures include, but are not limited to: blood-borne pathogens; allergens; dirt; odors; dust; cold and hot temperatures; and unpredictable behavior from students.
