Preschool/DayCare Coordinator

POSITION PURPOSE:

Plans and manages the daily operations of a district preschool or daycare. Performs a variety of tasks in the development of an instructional program by working with pre-school or daycare children. Prepares instructional materials, conducts planned activities using teacher designated methods and materials. Provides a safe and developmentally appropriate preschool or daycare program in accordance with all relevant legislation, policies and procedures.

Performs work of a variable nature in accordance with established procedures and guidelines under general supervision; responsible for day-to-day decision-making. May assign work to an assistant.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Plans and manages the day-to-day operational needs of the pre-school / day care, including budget development and tracking, evaluating student registration and setting tuition charges and schedules, developing and maintaining parent accounts, purchasing food and supplies, and other tracking and bookkeeping activities for the pre-school / day care.
  2. Plans and conducts pre-registration and registration processes.
  3. Along with a supervising Assistant Principal, develops curriculum and plans, prepares and teaches age appropriate lessons for children under 6 years involved in the program; maintains classroom discipline; prepares instructional materials; plans and coordinates field trips. Discusses children’s development with parents. Communicates and problem solves with staff, parents, student workers and community members regarding activities.
  4. Establishes and maintains a safe and inviting classroom environment; ensures equipment and facility are clean, well maintained and safe at all times and that children are supervised at all times.
  5. Along with a supervising Assistant Principal, plans and oversees the daily activities and development of high school students assisting at the preschool / day care; develops and teaches child development concepts to the students, and provides training and guidance to participating students; monitors and reports student progress; prepares assignments and administers tests; communicates with parents, students, and other professional staff.
  6. Prepares all billing for government agencies and communities.
  7. Works closely with state agencies (i.e. AFS< FCS< Job Council and Health Department) and makes referrals as needed.
  8. Maintains accurate daily, monthly children’s naps, meals, attendance diaper and bottle usage as required by the Childcare Division.
  9. Assume responsibility for facilitation the CCD grant.
  10. Along with a supervising Assistant Principal, performs long-range planning for the following school year.
  11. Completes a variety of reports and records for the preschool / daycare.
  12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

  • Child development and early education theories and instructional practices, procedures and equipment, and curriculum development.
  • Relevant legislation, policies, and procedures as applicable to a preschool / day care environment.

Skills/Ability to:

  • Provide guidance and learning opportunities for participating high school students.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers and other employees.

  • Work effectively in a multi-tasking environment and balance various demands.

  • Understand and execute oral and written instructions, policies and procedures and exercise effective verbal and listening skills.
  • Apply cultural awareness and sensitivity in daily interactions with preschoolers, day care students, students, parents, and co-workers.
  • Keep updated on developments in early childhood education.
  • Operate standard office equipment.
  • Physically perform assigned duties.
  • Effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and staff from diverse cultures or backgrounds in English, Spanish, or other languages related to the job.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is appropriate. A representative way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and one year experience performing responsible work in a pre- school/day care or kindergarten environment.
  • Two year degree in early child development; step 10 in Oregon’s pathway for childcare providers.
  • Two years experience working in an ASE or elementary school environment.

LICENSING/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of or ability to obtain, a valid Oregon or Washington driver’s license
  • Possession of or ability to obtain, CPR/First Aid, Food Handler certification.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work may be performed indoors or outdoors. Incumbent must be able to stand, walk, drive, sit, keyboard, push, pull, restrain, lift up to 60lbs, bend, stoop, twist, kneel, reach, write, speak, and hear. Weekly dealing with distraught or difficult individuals. The position works with mentally, socially or emotionally disabled students, both in the classroom and in off-campus settings. May require regular focus on a computer screen. Travel may be required.
