WE Expect Excellence: Rocket Readers at Rock Creek ES
This summer, 42 students at Rock Creek Elementary School blasted off their summer reading with a program called Rocket Readers. Rock Creek Elementary School staff and Forester's Financial employees partnered together to support the students in their summer reading goals.
Two students in each kindergarten through fourth grade class selected five books; two fiction, two non-fiction and one book of science experiments, to read during the summer. The books were purchased through a partnership with the school's Parent-Teacher Club (PTC), Forester's Financial, the SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) program and the Beaverton Education Foundation (BEF). Students were also given a backpack donated by Nike and pre-addressed postcards to send to their Forester's Financial Reading Buddies.
Once they finished a book, they sent their Reading Buddy a postcard telling them all about the book and what they liked about it. Upon receipt, the volunteers mailed the student a return postcard, praising them for their efforts and encouraging them to keep reading.
"It is our hope that these students will not only maintain their reading skills over the summer, but improve them because of this program," says Sherry Krueger, Rock Creek ES Intervention Specialist. "We also hope that these books provided our students and their families an avenue for enjoying rich conversations, wondering, reflecting, and going places they never dreamed of going."
Fall assessments will be used to look for evidence of reading growth. Each of the students will also have the opportunity to talk about their experience and the books that they read. Later in the fall, Forester's Financial and the BEF have planned an ice cream celebration for all of the participants and volunteers to meet each other and celebrate the learning that occurred over the summer.
