Two-way Immersion Philosophy Statement

Two-way Immersion (TWI) prepares students to be leaders in our world.  TWI promotes bilingualism, biliteracy, cross-cultural competency and high academic standards.  It empowers students to communicate and broaden their understanding of the world through community relationships at home, at school and in their neighborhood.  Proficiency in two languages allows students to communicate with family and communities.

Additive bilingualism enriches and protects the home language while learning a second language.  Research demonstrates that students have higher long-term achievement as well as greater self-confidence and positive self-image when they have a solid academic base in their native language.

TWI programs provide students equal access to the curriculum in both English and the target language.  Rigorous and relevant instruction in two languages creates multiple opportunities for speaking, listening, reading, and writing to achieve high academic standards.  Instruction in the target language equalizes the status of both languages.  Cognitive, linguistic, and critical thinking skills in two languages are an integral part of TWI.  Highly qualified, well-trained and culturally competent teachers are crucial to the success of our diverse student population.  Staff development must be purposeful, research-based, and ongoing.

TWI prepares students with the foundation to lead societies, develop their knowledge, achieve while improving partnerships in home, school, and community.  Students will benefit in the long term with expanded career options and professional opportunities.
