We Are Crew ... Not Passengers!

At Health and Science School (HS2) students participate in a students advisory course entitled Crew. Crew supports students by helping them become critical thinkers and problem-solvers through initiatives, Socratic seminars, and service projects. Initiatives are activities that focus on relationship and team building. Within Crew students receive individual academic advisement, guided independent reading around current issues that shape our culture and world, explicit instruction of study skills, organization, and time management, and cooperative skills with fellow crew members. Developing positive, supportive relationships between crewmembers and the crew leader is essential to crew success. Students participate in Crew every year of middle school and high school. The structures of crew are embedded in everything we do at HS2 including how we run staff meetings, learning teams, and student groups. All members of the HS2 academic family (staff, parents, students) are Crew.
