WHAT IS AVID?
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) has been at Beaverton High School since 2013. The mission statement of AVID seems simple: to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. But in reality, preparing students for success takes a lot of work from a dedicated team that includes teachers, students, families, and the community.
AVID is an academic elective class during the school day.
The three main components of the program are:
- Academic instruction: The AVID curriculum, based on rigorous standards, was developed by middle and senior high school teachers in collaboration with college professors. It is driven by the WICOR method, which stands for writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading.
- Tutorial support: 40% of a student's time in an AVID elective class is spent in collaborative tutorial groups that are led by trained AVID tutors.
- Motivational activities: AVID is, at its core, a family on-campus. Students engage in class-level and cross-level team builders. In addition to these, students in all grade levels of AVID have the opportunity to visit multiple college campuses during the year, listen to guest speakers, and participate in community service projects.

AVID students are students in the middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path with support.
These students often are not realizing their full potential academically. In the identification process a number of criteria are considered, including:
- GPA (Ideally between 2.0-3.5)
- Discipline History
- Attendance (Good attendance is a must)
- Desire and Determination
- First in the Family to Attend College
- Economically Disadvantaged
- Other Special Circumstances
