Sunset High School is a comprehensive public school with about 2100 students, grades 9-12. Located in a suburban area of Portland, Oregon, Sunset is accredited by the Northwest Association of Secondary Schools and the Oregon State Department of Education. The socio-economic level is diverse, with most parents having a college education. However, our students range from being homeless to upper class. 40% of our students are minority. 28% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. 18% of our students qualify as talented and gifted. 88% of our faculty holds masters or doctorate degrees.

Sunset High School is known as a "school of excellence." It is noted for its academic climate, offering a comprehensive array of advanced classes in all subject areas as well as a variety of dual credit courses in several academic areas. Starting in 2013/14 Sunset will be offering an Honors Diploma in addition to our International Baccalaureate and Standard diplomas. Sunset High School offers the International Baccalaureate program. This program offers a rigorous academic curriculum for motivated and ambitious students. The graduating class of 2003 was the first group of students with the opportunity to earn the Full International Baccalaureate Diploma. Students earn the diploma by passing six internationally set and graded exams, completion of a 4000 word extended essay, the Theory of Knowledge course and CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) community service hours. Students may also receive IB certificates by passing individual exams. Sunset’s first IB class had nine diploma candidates of which eight earned their IB diploma. In 2012/13 we had 33 I.B. Diploma Candidates.
