________________AVID Elective Class________________
This elective focuses on the main college readiness skills our students need to be successful in high school and beyond. The key skills taught are writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading. In addition to developing core skills students receive support in exploring their college options and build a "family" community in their AVID elective class.
______________The "Ideal" AVID Student_______________
AVID students are students in the middle, capable of completing a college preparatory path with support. These students often are not realizing their full potential academically. In the identification process a number of criteria are considered, including:
GPA (Ideally between 2.0-3.5)
Citizenship (No serious discipline issues allowed)
Attendance (Good attendance is a must)
Desire and Determination
First in the Family to Attend College
Historically Underrepresented in 4-year colleges/universities
Other Special Circumstances
Focuses on 4 key elements:
Instruction: Staff focus on schoolwide strategies to promote school wide learning and student engagement.
Systems: Examine our programs to ensure all students have access to a rigorous core curriculum.
Culture: Building an environment promoting college and or career options for every student after high school.
Leadership: Developing teacher and student leaders to impact our building for AVID schoolwide initiatives.
