With Superintendent Dr. Gustavo Balderas departing on January 30, the Beaverton School Board has begun the search for our next district leader. While the Board is responsible for the final hiring decision, we believe community perspective is vital to finding the right fit for our district.

The School Board has named Michael Schofield to serve as interim superintendent of the Beaverton School District for the remainder of the school year, between the departure of current superintendent Dr. Gustavo Balderas and the hiring and arrival of the district’s next superintendent.

The Beaverton School Board met this evening to discuss the leadership transition plan for our district. As previously announced, Dr. Gustavo Balderas has accepted a new role as the superintendent for the Puget Sound Educational Service District in Washington.

We’re beginning the second phase of our student mental health and wellness initiative, Believe You Matter, with a focus on social media and digital health. In today’s hyper-connected world, digital media—especially social platforms—shape how students communicate, learn and express themselves. These tools can foster connection, creativity and exploration, but they also pose real challenges that can affect students’ mental health and academic success.

We want to share an update about recent conversations between BSD and Hope Chinese Charter School (HCCS). Over the past months, HCCS explored different options for its future, including the possibility of dissolving its charter and integrating into BSD.
